Frequently Asked Questions

What if I don’t have a 2.50 GPA to be eligible?
Students who do not have the required 2.50 high school GPA or 2.50 collegiate GPA (if they have taken 12 or more collegiate credit hours following their high school graduation) are unable to participate in Formal Recruitment.

How do I obtain information about Formal Recruitment once I get to campus?
You can read through our website, follow IFC on Instagram or Facebook for updates, and speak with Rho Alphas (recruitment advisors) during recruitment events. Additionally, feel free to email IFC at ulifcvpr@gmail.com.

What if I am going to miss or be late for an event during Formal Recruitment?
Potential New Members are required to attend all Formal Recruitment events unless they have an excused absence. PNMs will receive a form via email to notify the Interfraternity Council of any classes or other obligations, ensuring Rho Alphas are aware of your expected absences. Please note, per the PNM Code of Conduct, PNMs who miss an event without submitting an absence form risk being removed from Formal Recruitment.

Why is it so expensive to join a fraternity? Where does the money go?
Fraternity dues vary by chapter but are generally used for chapter house maintenance, social events, international and local dues, educational programming, leadership development, and community service projects. For estimated financial information for each chapter, refer to the IFC Recruitment Guide. Be sure to ask specific questions about finances during recruitment!

I’m concerned someone I know is being hazed. Who can I tell?
If you have any information related to hazing incidents, please inform Student Rights and Responsibility (SRR) at (337) 482-6373. You can also fill out a confidential online hazing report or report anonymously by calling (337) 482-6276. Neither IFC nor the University of Louisiana at Lafayette condones hazing in any form.

If chapters are overseen by their national organization, who does IFC report to?
The University of Louisiana at Lafayette Interfraternity Council reports to the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life.

Is it difficult to balance fraternity life and academics?
Time management is key. Many fraternity members successfully balance fraternity responsibilities, jobs or internships, academics, and involvement in other campus organizations. If you are interested in joining a fraternity but have concerns about the time commitment, ask current members during recruitment how they manage their time.

How will I know which organization is right for me?
Each fraternity has its own mission, creed, and values. IFC organizations strive to offer friendship, personal growth, development opportunities, and fun. To choose the right chapter, do some research, attend IFC recruitment events, and visit the organizations’ social media pages. Formal recruitment is designed to help you and the chapters find the best fit. Keep an open mind, ask questions, and be yourself throughout the process.
